Discovering North America

Hi everyone! Who else is LOVING this cool weather? Please make sure your child has appropriate  (LABELED!!!) outdoor clothing as the outdoor classroom is quite chilly in the morning. Thank you!

This month we are discovering all of the wonders that the continent of North America has to offer. We learned about how North America is made up of three many different countries. Ms. Jessie showed us lots of pictures of different animals that live in North America and we are learning their names in Spanish! Mapache = raccoon, bisonte = bison, castor = beaver, and perrito de la praderas = prairie dog. Ms. Sadie showed us pictures of the United States that showed how different our country is from coast to coast. She also taught us about different landmarks in the U.S. like the Statue of Liberty and the Golden Gate Bridge.

We have also been discovering the Mojave Desert. We have learned what nocturnal animals live there, how diurnal animals survive in the desert, and even the history of the different people that have lived in the desert.

We have all heard the saying, “monkey see, monkey do.” Our children are always watching us to see how we behave and respond in situations. It is important to be mindful of our actions and words. For example, it’s easy to tell our children to eat lots of fresh vegetables, but it doesn’t mean much to them if we’re not also eating them. Model how you express different feelings in appropriate ways. Taking deep breaths when you’re angry instead of yelling, telling them that you feel sad and that you need a minute alone, or sharing why you’re happy. Make sure your child sees you reading books, enjoying fresh air, being kind to others and taking time for yourself. Children learn by watching us.

5, 4, 3, 2, 1….. BLAST OFF!

Here in P2 we have boarded our rocketship and have been exploring space! We started out by learning about the sun and about how important the sun is for life on Earth. We saw how all of the planets orbit the sun and how the closer planets have shorter orbits while planets like Neptune and Uranus take a looooong time to go around the sun. Ms. Julie taught us about asteroids and we got to experiment by dropping a large rock into a container of materials that represented the Earth’s surface. We saw how it make a big hole! We also learned that asteroids don’t have tails, while comets do!

Ms. Sadie taught us about Mercury and how poor Mercury doesn’t have an atmosphere, so it’s freezing cold on one side of the planet, and scalding how on the other. She also taught us about the layers of the Earth and we found out that we live on the crust of the Earth. Ms. Jessie taught us about Venus and how Venus is the hottest planet, but doesn’t have a single moon!

We are so proud of all of your hard work! We miss you all and look forward to seeing you back at school on Thursday February 4th!

Proteins and Grains and Apples -OH MY!

It’s September, and we have been enjoying the (slightly) cooler weather!

While inside we have learned about our love lights. Ms. Sadie taught us a peace lesson on how every single person is different, but we all have a light inside of us. Sometimes that light is shining bright (like when we’re happy), but sometimes it gets very dim (like when we’re angry). We were taught that taking deep breaths can help our love light to shine bright again. There are love lights for us to pin punch out and tape to our chests if we want to show everyone how bright our love light is shining.

Chicken, peaches, broccoli, cereal and milk all belong to different food groups. We’ve learned about each group and what foods might be in that group. For protein we discussed how we can get protein from many different sources, not just meat. We have talked about what food groups our lunches are coming from, and what food groups our breakfasts belong too also. Did anyone have cereal for breakfast? That belongs to the grains (or granos) group! Some of our works this month have included sorting foods into the right groups, as well as looking at the different names of foods in Spanish.

We’ve learned about the differences between fruits and vegetables; fruits have seeds. Some foods that we were pretty sure were vegetables, like eggplant and bell peppers, turned out to be fruit! Boy were we surprised! We’ve also looked inside an apple and talked about the exocarp, the endocarp and the pips. Ms. Jessie taught us how to correctly pick an apple: twist it off! Don’t pull or it may damage the branches.

Our friends are learning how to politely interrupt a teacher when they need to ask us a question or if they need help. They are taught to place their hand calmly on our shoulder and quietly wait. When we feel their hand on our shoulder we may touch their hand briefly so that they know that we know they are there. Everyone has been practicing lots and have been doing so well with peaceful interruptions.

Please keep in mind that the mornings are starting to get cooler and the outdoor classroom is in the shade all morning. It is important for your child to have a light jacket or sweatshirt so that they may still enjoy their outdoor activities and stay warm.

Reminder: Please make sure to label your masks. We have many friends, and labels make it much easier to keep track of everyone’s masks! Thank you in advance.

End of our school year! 2020

Dear Friends,

It’s the last day of school?

We are very grateful for all of your support, and the warmth and the learning that we have shared this school year, especially these past few weeks. We are very proud of the way our children handled this challenge that was thrown at us with no notice. You caught the ‘ball’ and learned to ‘juggle.’ Collectively, we zoomed to the finish line…GOAL accomplished!

Time really flies!

For our Kindergarteners, you have grown your wings and you are ready to fly. It has been an amazing opportunity to watch your journey of growth through the primary program to become the independent learner you are today. We wish you much success and good luck in first grade. Congratulations!

It’s Summer!

Enjoy the sunshine, smell the flowers, make smoothies, learn a new skill, and tell us all about it when we see you AGAIN!

April 14, 2020

Hola P2, let’s Zoom!

We were all so happy to see your smiling faces during our first P2 zoom meeting, we miss you all! We hope to continue to see you, chat and why not have a sing along!  During our P2 social zoom meetings, you are welcome to ask us questions, share your thoughts and or ideas, or simply just say “hello.” This is a wonderful opportunity to see your friends! We will send you the link every Thursday to join us on Friday mornings @ 10:00 a.m.  While we look forward to seeing each and everyone of you during this time, we also understand if you are not able to attend and choose to join us by continuing to watch our Box videos, share on our P2 Facebook page, or connect with us via email.

We are open for Preschool and Pre-K friends. We are here with hearts and eyes wide open, and ready to serve you as best we can. Our classrooms have been sanitized and prepared to teach you all about South America, Rain forests, and birds. While we love the freedom of the Montessori environment, SAFETY first! Friends will be assigned a table, a work mat, and pencil box that they can use for the week. Students may select their work or complete assigned work, which will be disinfected after every use. Mrs. Val is also on campus during this time of uncertainty Coach Bob and Ms. Rachel plan to teach us more wonderful dance and movement exercises, EVERYDAY!

Much Love,

Ms.Jessie, Ms. Sadie, Ms. Julie
